Mashups and Copyright Law

The mashup that I have chosen to reflect upon is "A Fair(y) Use Tale" by Eric Faden.

1. What is the mashup trying to communicate? Is it technical experiment, social or political commentary, a comedic parody, or an abstract work of media art?
This mashup is trying to communicate a lesson to the viewers. The purpose of the video is to teach the viewers about copyright and the restrictions and loopholes within it. This mashup is an abstract work of media art, a comedic parody as well as a political commentary. The reason it is an abstract work of media art is because it uses Disney uses the medium cartoon art. The Disney characters voices are tweaked and changed which makes the mashup a comedic parody. However, the political aspect of the mashup is also evident because Eric Faden talks about copyright as well as its laws and regulations.

2. Did its creator follow or break copyright laws in its production?
The creator followed copyright laws in the production of this film. It complies with the copyright law as it used a small amount of copyrighted material, and used it in order to teach without disturbing the commercial impact of the original material. Also, Eric Faden credits Disney for the footage and videos he uses in this video.

3. Do you think that mashup like this requires copyright permission? Why or why not.
Mash ups such as this one should continue to not require copyright permission as they do not commercially impact the original material, and they educate people, while keeping them entertained.
